Today I’m gonna walk you through how to make a depression era chocolate cake! Super delicious and very tasty chocolate cake. No eggs required!

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup sugar

1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1/2 tsp salt

1 tsp baking soda

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 tsp white vinegar

1/3 cup veg oil

1 cup water

Chocolate Frosting:

2 tbsp salted butter

1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1 cup powdered sugar

1 – 2 tbsps milk

1/4 tsp vanilla extract

Directions:

To a bowl, add in all of the dry ingredients. To another bowl, add in all of the wet ingredients. Give the wet ingredients a quick mix with a whisk before dumping it all into the dry ingredients. Mix the two together until the batter runs smooth. No lumpies.

Grease an 8×8 baking dish with either nonstick cooking spray or rub it down with a little bit of butter. Line the baking dish with parchment paper for easy removal after baking (this is not a necessary step, although I find it does help). Pour in the batter. Into a preheated oven at 350 degrees for 30 – 35 minutes. (Mine was done right at 30 minutes)

Let the cake cool completely in the baking dish before attempting to remove.

To make the frosting, either on the stovetop in a pot over medium heat or in a microwave safe bowl, add in the butter. Once the butter had melted, add in the cocoa powder and mix until it forms a thick paste, being careful not to burn it.

Transfer to a mixing bowl and add in the remaining ingredients. Mix with an electric mixer for 5 minutes. Once the frosting is nice and smooth, transfer it to your cake, evenly spreading out the frosting. Enjoy!
